Ashita Tolwani, MD, Msc

Professor of Medicine, Director for the Nephrology Fellowship Program, and Associate Scientist, Nephrology Research & Training Center at the University of Alabama at Birmingham

Dr. Tolwani is a specialist in Internal Medicine, Nephrology and graduated University of Alabama School of Medicine in 1994 and completed her nephrology fellowship there. She joined its Division as a faculty member in 1999. She received a Masters of Science in Clinical Epidemiology from the Harvard School of Public Health in June 2004. In addition to being a Professor of Medicine at the University of Alabama, Dr. Tolwani is the Program Director of the Nephrology Fellowship at the University of Alabama in Birmingham, AL and a scientist in the university’s Nephrology Research & Training Center. Her expertise is in citrate anticoagulation for CRRT. She heads the CRRT Program at the University of Alabama and organizes an annual UAB CRRT Academy for trainees, practicing physicians and nurses from across the United States. Dr. Tolwani completed a randomized prospective study comparing high dose continuous veno-venous hemodiafiltration (CVVHDF) with standard dose CVVHDF in critically ill patients with acute renal failure.
